When you need background removal
People remove image backgrounds for many reasons:
- Product photos, because e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Shopify and eBay often require white or transparent backgrounds. Clean product images also look more professional and convert better.
- Profile pictures for LinkedIn, company directories and ID photos, which look better against a plain background.
- Presentations, where logos and photos without backgrounds make slides look consistent.
- Marketing materials such as composite images, social media posts and ads, which often need the subject on a transparent background so it can be placed anywhere in the layout.
- Design projects, since designers often need isolated assets for UI mockups, websites and print materials.
Step 1: Upload your image
Open our Background Remover tool and click or drag your image into the upload area. The tool accepts JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, and HEIC files.
For the best results:
- Use a photo with clear contrast between the subject and background
- Make sure the lighting is good and even, because harsh shadows make edges harder to detect
- Crop the image to focus on the subject before uploading
Step 2: AI removes the background automatically
After you add your image, the AI model finds the main subject and removes the background. The first time, the browser downloads the model (about 4.6 MB for the fast version or 44 MB for the best one), and later runs start right away. How long it takes depends on your device and the image size.
If the result isn't perfect (with complex hair or semi-transparent objects, for example), adjust the sensitivity and edge smoothing sliders, or switch to the Best model.
Step 3: Download with transparent background
The tool outputs a PNG file with a transparent background. PNG is the standard format for images that need transparency, and all major browsers, image editors and design tools support it.
For logos and graphics on a plain background, the Transparent PNG Maker keys out the flat background color directly, which keeps sharp edges.
Common uses for transparent PNGs:
- Layer over any colored background in presentations
- Place on product cards with custom background colors
- Use as an overlay in video editing
- Upload to platforms that require transparent backgrounds
Step 4: Add a new background or convert to JPG (optional)
Once the background is gone, you can finish the image in a few ways. For a white background, convert the transparent PNG to JPG with our PNG to JPG converter; JPG doesn't support transparency, so the empty areas become white automatically. For a custom background, open the transparent PNG in any image editor and place a colored or gradient layer behind it. For product photos, our Product Photo Editor places the product on a white square with padding, at 1000, 1600 or 2048 pixels.
