Open Source Licenses

PixelConvertor's image tools are built on open source software. The codecs that read and write image formats, the AI model that removes backgrounds and the libraries behind the editor all come from projects whose authors publish their code under open licenses. This page lists them, with the license each one uses and where to find its source code. All of them run in your browser.

AI background removal

The background remover, Remove Background from Photo, Product Photo Editor and Transparent PNG Maker use the U²-Net model by Xuebin Qin and colleagues, released under the Apache License 2.0. We use two variants: U²-Net, with its weights stored as 8-bit values to make the download smaller, and the lighter U²-NetP. The model files are served from models.pixelconvertor.com.

The model runs with onnxruntime-web 1.30.0 by Microsoft, under the MIT License.

HEIC decoding (LGPL notice)

HEIC and HEIF photos are decoded with libheif-js 1.23.2, a WebAssembly build of the libheif library. libheif-js is licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License, version 3 (LGPL-3.0).

We use libheif-js without modification. It is loaded as a separate file, only when a HEIC image needs decoding, and it stays a replaceable part of the site. You can get the complete source code of this version from the libheif-js repository or the npm package, and the license text is available at gnu.org/licenses/lgpl-3.0.

Image codecs

The converters and compressors use WebAssembly codecs packaged by the jSquash project, each released under the Apache License 2.0:

  • @jsquash/jpeg 1.6.0, which wraps the MozJPEG encoder (libjpeg-turbo, under the IJG, BSD-3-Clause and zlib licenses)
  • @jsquash/webp 1.5.0, which wraps Google's libwebp
  • @jsquash/avif 2.1.1, which wraps libavif
  • @jsquash/oxipng 2.3.0, which wraps the oxipng PNG optimizer

Editing, vector and file tools

  • SVGO 4.1.0 optimizes SVG files (MIT License).
  • imagetracerjs 1.2.6 traces images into SVG vectors (released into the public domain under the Unlicense).
  • gifenc 1.0.3 encodes animated GIFs and reduces PNG palettes (MIT License).
  • Konva 10.6.0 and react-konva 19.3.0 power the image editor's canvas (MIT License).
  • exifr 7.1.3 reads EXIF, GPS, IPTC and XMP metadata (MIT License).
  • JSZip 3.10.1 builds the ZIP downloads (dual-licensed under MIT or GPL-3.0-or-later; we use it under the MIT License).

Site framework and fonts

The site is built with Astro 6.4.8 and React 19.3.0, both under the MIT License. The Inter and Geist Mono typefaces are served through Fontsource under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.
