Add up to 30 photos (JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or HEIC, up to 50 MB each) and the tool cuts out the main subject, leaving a transparent PNG or a new white, black, custom-colored or blurred background. Sensitivity and edge smoothing sliders fix cutouts that take too much or too little. The AI model runs in your browser, so your photos are not uploaded.
Remove backgrounds from photos in one click
This free online background eraser replaces the manual selection work you would otherwise do in a photo editor. Add a photo, look at the preview, and download the cutout. You don't need an account or any software.
How AI background removal works
The tool runs U²-Net, an open source neural network built to find the most prominent object in an image. It estimates, pixel by pixel, how likely each one is to be part of the subject, and turns that into a mask. The edges are then refined against the photo itself, which helps around hair and fur. You can choose the full model (about 44 MB) or a smaller, faster one (about 4.6 MB).
Transparent PNG output
With a transparent background, the result is saved as a PNG. PNG has an alpha channel that records which pixels are see-through, so you can place the subject over anything in a slide, web page, document or design file.
You can also replace the background instead of removing it. Pick white, black, any color from the color picker, or a blurred copy of the original scene. A solid background suits product photos and profile pictures, and those results can be saved as smaller JPG or WebP files.
Works with most photo types
Portraits, products, pets and objects all work, as long as there is one clear subject. When a result needs adjusting, the sensitivity slider moves the cutoff: lower values keep more around the subject, and higher values remove more. Photos where the subject blends into a busy background are the hardest case and may need a few tries.
Private, and fast after the first run
The model runs on your device through WebGPU when your browser supports it, or WebAssembly otherwise. Your photos are never uploaded. The first run downloads the model from our model server, and your browser caches it, so later visits skip that download. The libraries and model behind the tool are listed on the open source licenses page.
Common uses for background removal
Profile pictures and headshots look cleaner without a cluttered room behind them, whether for LinkedIn, a resume or a company directory. Online stores such as Amazon and Shopify often ask for product photos on plain white. Cutouts are also handy for flyers, social media graphics, slides in PowerPoint, Keynote or Google Slides, and collages where you place the subject on a new background.
Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is the AI background removal?
It does well on photos with one clear subject and decent contrast against the background, including many portraits with loose hair. It struggles more when the subject and background share colors. In those cases, adjust the sensitivity slider or try the Best model.
Can I process multiple photos at once?
Yes. You can add up to 30 photos and they are all processed with the same settings, which keeps product sets and team headshots consistent. Several results can be downloaded together as a ZIP file.
What is the best format for the output?
Use PNG when you need a transparent background, because it keeps the alpha channel. If you replace the background with a solid color, JPG or WebP files are smaller and work everywhere.
Will the edges look natural after background removal?
Usually, yes. The Refine option aligns the mask with the edges in your photo, and the edge smoothing slider softens the outline. Wispy hair and semi-transparent objects are the hardest parts, so adjust sensitivity and smoothing until the preview looks right.
Is this tool free for commercial use?
Yes. The tool is free, adds no watermark, and you keep full rights to your edited photos, so you can use them in commercial projects and client work.
