BMP to PNG Converter

Convert BMP bitmap images to lossless PNG files at a fraction of the size.

Add up to 30 BMP images (up to 50 MB each) and download them as PNG files. PNG keeps every pixel of the bitmap but compresses it, so the files are usually much smaller, and transparency in 32-bit BMPs carries over where your browser reads it. The conversion runs in your browser.

Convert BMP images to PNG

BMP files are usually uncompressed and very large, but they keep exact pixel data. Converting BMP to PNG keeps that same lossless quality in a far smaller, more practical file. How much smaller depends on the image: screenshots and graphics with flat colors shrink dramatically, while photos shrink less.

Why PNG instead of JPG?

PNG is lossless, so the converted file contains exactly the same pixels. JPG is lossy and can blur text, sharp edges, line art and flat colors, which are common in BMP files from screenshots, system graphics and older applications. Unless the BMP is a photo, PNG is the better target. For photos, BMP to JPG gives much smaller files.

Transparency

Some BMP files use 32-bit color with an alpha channel. PNG supports full alpha transparency, so when your browser reads the BMP's alpha channel, the transparency is kept in the PNG.

Why PNG works better than BMP

Browsers, image editors, office programs, upload forms and email all accept PNG, while BMP is often rejected. PNG can also store color profiles and metadata. Converting your BMP files makes them usable in modern workflows without changing a single pixel.

Private processing

Your BMP images are converted in your browser and never uploaded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BMP to PNG conversion lossless?

Yes. PNG compresses the pixel data without discarding anything, so the PNG contains every pixel of the original BMP.

Why is my PNG file still large after conversion?

PNG is lossless, so high-resolution images and photos stay fairly large even though they're much smaller than the BMP. For smaller files, use the PNG compressor in palette mode, or convert photos to JPG instead.

Can BMP transparency be converted to PNG?

Yes, when the BMP uses 32-bit color with an alpha channel and your browser decodes that channel. The PNG then keeps the transparent areas.

What is the difference between BMP and PNG?

BMP usually stores raw, uncompressed pixel data, so the files are very large. PNG uses lossless compression to make much smaller files with the same pixels, and it also supports color profiles and metadata.
