BMP to JPG Converter

Convert BMP bitmap images to much smaller JPG files that open anywhere.

Processed in your browser. Files never leave your device. No signup

Add up to 30 BMP images (up to 50 MB each) and download them as JPG files at the quality you choose (10 to 100, default 85). Transparent areas, if a BMP has any, are filled with white, black or a custom color. The conversion runs in your browser, and the JPGs are usually a small fraction of the BMP's size.

Convert BMP images to JPG

BMP (bitmap) is an old Windows image format that usually stores pixels with no compression at all. That keeps every pixel, but the files are huge: a 1920 × 1080 image takes over 6 MB as a 24-bit BMP. As a JPG the same image is typically a few hundred kilobytes with little visible difference.

What is BMP and why does it still exist?

BMP stores raw pixel values with minimal or no compression, which made sense when computers had little processing power to spare. You still find BMP files from legacy systems, older versions of Paint, scanners, fax software, industrial and scientific equipment, and old game textures. Converting them to JPG makes them practical to share, upload and store.

Quality and file size

JPG's lossy compression shrinks photographic BMPs enormously with no difference you'd notice at normal viewing size. The quality slider sets the balance: at 85 to 90, most conversions look the same as the BMP, and lower settings give smaller files.

When to use PNG instead

BMP is lossless, so it keeps sharp text and lines perfectly. JPG compression can blur those slightly, so for screenshots, diagrams, line art and text, convert to PNG instead, which is lossless and still much smaller than BMP. Use BMP to PNG for those images and keep JPG for photos.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are BMP files so large?

BMP stores image data with little or no compression. A 1920 × 1080 image in 24-bit color needs over 6 MB as a BMP, while a JPG of the same image is usually well under 1 MB.

Will converting BMP to JPG reduce quality?

A little, because JPG is lossy. At quality 85 to 90 the difference isn't visible in photos. For images with text or sharp lines, convert to PNG instead.

What programs create BMP files?

Older versions of Windows Paint, legacy scanner and fax software, older games, and industrial or scientific imaging systems. Modern programs rarely save BMP unless asked to.

Can I convert BMP to JPG on my phone?

Yes. The converter works in mobile browsers. Pick BMP files on your device and download the JPGs, with no app to install.
