HEIC to PNG Converter

Convert iPhone HEIC photos to lossless PNG files in your browser.

Processed in your browser. Files never leave your device. No signup

Add up to 30 iPhone HEIC photos (up to 50 MB each) and download them as PNG files. PNG stores the decoded photo losslessly, so editing and saving it later adds no new compression artifacts, and transparency is kept if the HEIC has any. The conversion runs in your browser with a built-in HEIC decoder, so it works in every major browser, and your photos are never uploaded.

Convert iPhone HEIC photos to PNG

This HEIC to PNG converter turns iPhone and iPad photos into PNG. JPG is the usual choice for sharing HEIC photos, but PNG is the better one when you need lossless quality or transparency, neither of which JPG offers.

When to choose PNG over JPG

PNG compression is lossless, so the decoded photo is stored exactly. That makes it a good choice for photos you will edit further, screenshots with text or sharp edges, images that will be processed again later, and anything that must stay pixel-perfect. PNG also has an alpha channel for transparency, which JPG lacks.

Quality and file size

Because PNG keeps every pixel, the files are much larger than the HEIC originals and larger than JPG versions of the same photos, often several times larger. For editing, high-resolution printing and design work that size is worth it. For everyday sharing, HEIC to JPG gives far smaller files.

Private processing

The conversion runs in your browser, so your HEIC photos are never uploaded. The PNG files are saved without the original EXIF data, which also removes the GPS location. The HEIC decoder, libheif, is listed with its license on the open source licenses page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does converting HEIC to PNG lose quality?

The PNG keeps the decoded photo exactly, so the conversion adds no compression loss. iPhone photos can store more than 8 bits per color, and the PNG is saved at 8 bits per channel, which you won't notice in normal viewing. The tradeoff is a much larger file than JPG or the original HEIC.

When should I use PNG instead of JPG for HEIC conversion?

Use PNG when you need transparency, plan to edit the image further, or need an exact copy without new artifacts. Use JPG when file size and compatibility matter more, since JPG files are much smaller.

Why are my PNG files so much larger than the HEIC originals?

HEIC uses lossy compression borrowed from video codecs to keep files small, while PNG stores every pixel without loss. A 2 MB HEIC can easily become a PNG several times that size. If that's too big, run the result through the PNG compressor or convert to JPG instead.

Can I keep the transparency from my HEIC photo in PNG?

Yes. If the HEIC image has transparency, the PNG keeps it. Regular iPhone camera photos don't have transparent areas, though, so the PNG will be fully opaque. JPG can't store transparency at all.
